Energy Boost Secret #1: Breathe
I know, not exactly earth shattering, but when done properly is certainly capable of being hair raising!
Most people utilize a mere 50% of their lung capacity. Children, on the other hand, utilize 90% of their lung capacity! And they run around all day long with seemingly limitless energy! Do you want some of that?
Who doesn’t! What we need to do is increase our lung capacity. The best way to do that is to take deeper breaths. Get that belly moving. When you expand the belly as you breathe in, the diaphragm moves allowing the lungs to take in more air.
More energy is just one of many benefits of increased lung capacity. You also get:
- Improved Circulation
- Better Focus and Concentration
- Total Relaxation
- … and much more!
Energy Boost Secret #2: Healthy Eating
Between the government changing our dietary requirements on a regular basis and the fast food marketing machine working overtime, it’s no wonder that most of us are becoming a little more plump than our parents were.
As a result, we’re out of shape, lacking energy and motivation to do anything about it. Unfortunately, changing your eating habits will not happen over night. You’ll need to commit to the change and make a plan that works for you. Fortunately, I can give you 2 super, silly, simple tips that can help you immediately:
- Eat a more balanced plant based diet. Notice that I didn’t say to become a vegetarian. That takes a level of commitment that most people are not up to doing just yet. Just eat more vegetables, legumes, fruits and eat less grains, meat and sweets.
- Know what a portion looks like and eat your portion. No more and no less. If that means you need to weigh and measure your food, then that’s what you need to do.
Small changes bring about huge results. For instance, commit to eating a salad (light on the dressing) every day with one of your meals. That one change alone can be the catalyst for other changes in your diet that can give you abundant energy.
Energy Boost Secret #3: Water
If you ask people what they drink, most likely they’ll answer: coffee, tea, pop (or soda, if you prefer), juice, wine, beer, but very few will answer water. Yet, it is water that we need for survival.
Yes, we do get water from the foods we eat and the other liquids we drink. But it is pure water that the body craves, desires and needs! We’re are mostly made of water. We have a multitude of fluids coursing through our bodies continuously. We need the water to help produce those fluids. Water also serves as a way to flush toxins, impurities and waste out of the body. Which is why we’re constantly told to drink plenty of fluids when we’re sick.
The best way to get more water in the body, is to drink more water! I know, what a hair raising idea. To do that, let’s keep it simple. Commit to the following schedule:
- 2 glasses when you wake up
- 1 glass before each meal and snack
- 1 glass before you go to bed
Assuming you eat 3 meals and 2 snacks, that gives you 8 glasses of water a day. Drink the water at room temperature, or slightly cooler or warmer. Never drink ice water as it can have a negative effect on the digestive system.
Energy Boost Secret #4: Sleep
Now, we all get sleep. If we didn’t get any sleep, we’d all be zombies. But, that’s exactly what is happening. Research has proven that we need 8-9 hours of restful sleep each night. Studies have shown that we actually get 6.5-7 hours of sleep on average. That’s an average which means some of us are getting less than 6.5 hours a night!
This sleep deprivation is cumulative and over time can affect us in many ways: we’re tired or lack energy, not focused, forgetful and we become more stressed. In other words, we start to resemble zombies!
The best way to get more sleep is to set aside a minimum of 8 hours per night for sleep. Remember, we need to sleep for 8 hours, not just be in bed for 8 hours. Try these tips for a better night’s sleep:
- Make sure the room is dark, or wear an eye mask
- Ban all electronics from the bedroom
- Abstain from checking email or web surfing before bed
- Create a relaxing routine to help you unwind
- Don’t drink caffeine late in the afternoon and minimize sugar in the evening
Getting into the habit of better sleep is not easy. You’ll need to commit fully and make this a priority. If you need to, put it in your agenda and stick to it.
Energy Boost Secret #5: Exercise
This last secret may seem counter-intuitive since you’re using energy to exercise. How can using energy give me an energy boost? It depends on what exercises you are doing. There are plenty of different exercises to choose from, choose the ones that will help you reach your goals.
Now, I am partial to Tai Chi, Qigong and Yoga. These are gentle, low impact exercises that help energize the body by using different body movements such as twisting and bending coupled with breathing and visualization techniques to cultivate, distribute and manage chi (energy) in the body.
Don’t discount other forms of exercise such as cardio training, strength training or just a simple walk. They all have their advantages and disadvantages. It’s up to you to figure out what works best for you. Join a gym and try some of the group classes. Find a Tai Chi or Martial Arts school in your neighborhood. There are plenty of options to choose from and no excuses to go and try them.
Commit to exercising 4-5 days a week, 45 minutes to an hour each day. Depending on your level of intensity, this is the average you should shot for. Mix it up occasionally, try different things. It keeps the mind interested and you won’t get bored.
OK, I know what you’re saying. These are not secret, earth shattering or hair raising! But, they are natural and can boost your energy to limits you haven’t seen in a long time. They do take time and a level of commitment. What you need to ask yourself is if you keep doing what you’re doing now, will you have more energy a month, 6 months or a year from now?
I’ve laid out some real simple things you can do right now to help change your life. It’s now up to you to do something about it. Have questions? Let me know in the comments section below.
